Question by : Why are diseases that affect the liver serious health risks?
I’m in Bio 20, and this is a question from an assignment. My textbook doesn’t answer this, all it says is diseases that affect the liver, not why there health risks.

I believe that any disease that affects the liver is a serious health risk because the liver is a vital organ which everyone needs to survive. The liver is important for detoxification; say for example someone drinks a lot of alcohol (the liver helps to detox and get it out of the system). In addition whenever you take medications, the liver is what breaks them down (for ex. Tylenol). I learned in my immunology class that liver is also the red blood cell “graveyard” (it helps to break down dead rbcs). In addition, the liver creates many important chemicals which are needed for digestion. The liver plays many vital roles in the body (way more than what I have told you) & without it, people can not survive; ergo, any disease which affects the liver is serious.

Q&A: Is it true that you can get diseases from drinking from a hose pipe?

2012年2月5日 日曜日

Question by Melody: Is it true that you can get diseases from drinking from a hose pipe?
or garden hose for any non speaking southern folks out there. My bf says you can, I say no…… cheesecake bet riding on this one!

Best answer:

Answer by Kate
No, you will not get a disease from drinking out of a hose. The myth comes from the fact that hose water sometimes has higher concentrations of lead and other hard metals (like copper) from the spigot. These concentrations are in no way high enough to cause you physical damage – they just affect the taste (hence the “hose water” taste) and aren’t quite as pure as, say, filtered water.

Personally I prefer the taste of hose water… might be ’cause I pretty much lived outside as a kid, and was encouraged to drink from the hose rather than track my filth in and out of the house. :-) And I’m perfectly healthy!

What Diseases could these symptoms be from?

2012年2月4日 土曜日

Question by Martin K: What Diseases could these symptoms be from?
My Girlfriend’s 2nd cousins. Here is the background. She had birth to 2 boys. The younger of the two passed away at about the age of 3 months. Autopsy results have only concluded heart and Kidney failure, even from specialists. The older brother is now 2 years old. He has similar symptoms but appears to have them less severe. One original Diagnosis was Bruton’s Disease which is an immune deficiency condition but this was later dismissed. He is very limited in his speech and can not walk on his own but has recently been able to stand with the help of an object. He also suffers from seizures but medication has helped. In appearance he seems to be normal and shows no obvious signs of retardation. He has seen specialists and his younger brother has been autopsied and studied by specialists but there is still no diagnosis. Thought I might give this a try.

Q&A: Do these world regions have a high incidence for tuberculosis and other vaccine diseases?

2012年2月3日 金曜日

Question by MoxyGirl: Do these world regions have a high incidence for tuberculosis and other vaccine diseases?
Africa
Latin America
Asia
The Mediterranean
Central and Eastern Europe

Because many people from those regions seem to have that round, circular scar on either the left or right upper arm that was left by that vaccine. Why?

Best answer:

Answer by MagnusMoss
I’m confused by your question. That list of places includes the majority of the Earth’s population.

How is tuberculosis a “vaccine” disease? It’s not a disease you can eliminate with vaccines. There is a vaccine against it, but it doesn’t work very well…they don’t even bother using it in the US.

There has been a recent increase in tuberculosis because:
1.) Antibiotic resistant strains have evolved.
2.) Many countries pulled money out of programs to fight tuberculosis to fund efforts to fight HIV.
3.) HIV patients are particularly vulnerable to tuberculosis.
